ROBBIE MALINGA

MEMOIR

Robbie Malinga started his career with bubblegum music, Freddie Gwala of Amadamara fame and Platform1who made the anthem Isencane Lengane, he played keyboards for both acts and that was when he made his mark in the music industry in the late 90’s. The group platform1 became an alternate group when it came to wedding songs and the did duly well when they also released another hit song, which Robbie became part of.

Robbie was one of the Kwaito pioneers when he started the kwaito group Vardos form the East Rand and also became a huge success with Doc Shebeleza when they formed a duo known as Robodoc in 1999. Before the duet with Doc Shebeleza, where he produced hit songs like Ebumnandini and skumfete, Robbie did successful solo project with the album called Insimbi.

In kwaito Robbie was responsible for shaping the careers of many artists like Brown dash, Kabelo, Arthur Mafokate, Izinyoka, mzekezeke and Sbu Amaloya fame. He is also responsible for producing Brickz/s album at TS Records

Robbie is know for reviving the sounds of World group Stimela in his Hit song Ilobolo from the same album. He is one of the pioneers of Afropop music, having worked with Afro pop king, th elate Jabu Khanyile on the album Sqhubu Samatseketshe in 2001. In the same year, he became part of the gospel star Deborah Fraser’s success with her debut album Abanye Bayombona, which went on to become a multi-platinum seller.Robbie also produced Deborah Fraser’s Hit song Dila nabo nkosi a track which is a favorite during live shows. To show his versatility, Robbie didn’t end with Deborah Fraser in terms of producing hit songs for gospel artists

Robbie also worked with Sharon Dee, Thembinkosi on the hit song Usathan Ujampa amafence, Redeemed, the veteran gospel group Pure Gold and the only gospel group to work under Ts Records called S’nethemba.

In Afropop he discovered Malaika previously known as Stouters, which went on to win multiple awards in South Africa, Robbie was approached by both Bongani Nchang and the late band member Jabu Ndaba in 2001 that they would love to work with him They were both from Klerksdorp and had just moved to Gauteng when they got an opportunity to approach Robbie. Robbie was very impressed when they first met and the sang for him, he didn’t waiste no time and produced them. From just signing and producing The Stouters/Malaika, Robbie went to work and co produce his album named Susana with the late Jabu Ndaba of Malaika and Brown Dash’s album dashboard. Producing a song titled Sekunzima, where he collaborated with thembisile Ntaka of former Pop group Adilah.

Robbie worked wonders in Afro Pop genre when he produced award winning albums for Ts Records artists such as Ntando, Kelly Khumalo’s album, Thembisile Ntaka’s debut solo album, award winning Adilah, Puleng, who won Metro Fm Awards an dlater joined South Africa’s Lion King, Nhlanhla Nciza of Ts Records on her solo offering Inguquko, his find Fiso and Ts records artist Lungelo





Robbie was part of the producers who worked with Grammy award winning producer Lebo M when they remixed Lion King to Umhlaba Wabantu for the South African audiences. Lebo M also taught Robbie the ropes by taking him to New York for music business matters

The Meadowlands, Soweto born musician and multi instrumentalist, also produced the Orlando Pirates theme song Bhakaniya for their 70th celebrations and together with Dj Kent produced the official theme song for the 2010 FIFA World Cup which was held in South Africa on behalf of Mc Donalds which was an official sponsor

Robbie also worked with/featured Mahalia Buchanan on his hit song called Lilizela which was about 2010 world cup

Having done all albums such as Insimbi, Second hand, Lobola, Meadowlands and Lilizela he cememted his place in the music industry with his versatility and went on to produce the best selling SAMA, Metro Fm and multiple ward winning artist Zahara on her debut album which won 8 SAMAS in one night and surpassed the highest selling record which was held by the late Brenda Fassie when combined with digital and physical sales

One of Robbie’s career highlights was workig together with multiple Grammy award winning group Lady Smith Black Mambazo on a track titled Rise again on Zaharas second album Phedula

Robbie also produced Kwa zulu Natal artist Naima kay and the album was also a winner. Naima Kay was introduced to Robbie by a friend and business associate Durban based business man Mdu Ngcobo. Its not a lie when they said everything Robbie touched turned into gold. Naima Kay also joined the winning wagon and won multiple awards

After Robbie won a reality show called clash of the choirs, he went back in studio with Zahara to work on her third album titled Country Girl which did very well in the market and he also featured on the album on the hit single Bendiwrongo

In 2015 Robbie started his own record company called Robbie malinga Entertainemt which is widely known as RME and house artists such as Musa Sukwene, Samito and a Botswana born artist Maxi.

Robbie scooped 2 awards at the SABC Top 10 Summer Song of the year 2015/16 for the album Mr Serious, Win bets Producer at the SAMA 2016 and won Lifetime Achievement Award at the Metro Fm Awards in 2014

In 2014 Robbie worked with Musa Sukwene on his debut album titled The Dream and on Musa’s second album titled Mr Serious which was nominated for SAMA’s and went to win a Metro FM Award for Best Afro Pop Album for its hit single Mthande and Nomkitha.

Robbie was not only an artist, producer and writer, he also held a position of A&R at Universal Music South Africa and was later moved to label manager focusing on local acts

Robbie continued to excel in the music industry when he was appointed as music producer for the country’s current top soapie Uzalo which aires on SABC1 weekdays at 8;30pm he was very excited to work on something completey different and challenging yet excelled in it

His latest body of work is self titled “Robbie Malinga”was released in November 2017
